According to WGRZ-TV, if you text and drive in New York, you are increasingly more likely to get a ticket.

The network reported that due to stronger laws and greater enforcement, texting and driving tickets in New York increased by 82 percent from 2012 to 2013. In New York City, the increase was even greater, at 89 percent.

WGRZ reported that in 26 of the state’s 62 counties, the number of tickets doubled. Statewide, law enforcement officials issued about 55,000 texting while driving tickets, up from about 30,000 tickets in 2012. Between 2012 and 2013, the number of texting while driving tickets went from 193 to 494 in Rockland County.

“Enforcement is one of the best ways to try and prove a point or get a point home,” NY State Police Trooper Victor Morales told WGRZ-TV. “But if people started doing their own research, and started looking into how many people are actually injured, not just killed but how many people are injured a year due to distractions, they’d be very surprised when you look at over 400,000 people being injured in car accidents because of distracted driving.”

Morales told the network that the problem is especially prevalent among young drivers.
