Fatal motorcycle accidents in the United States

Unfortunately, this fatal accident is only one of many to involve motorcyclists in New Jersey. In 2018 alone, there were 53 motorcycle accident fatalities. Nationwide, there were a total of 5,038 motorcycle accident fatalities in 2018– which have increased substantially since 2010.

In 2010, there were a total of 4,518 motorcycle accident fatalities. This represents an 11 percent increase. It should be noted that the number of registered motorcycles also increased over that period, but by a smaller percentage. In 2018, the fatality rate per 100,000 registered motorcycles was 58.18.

Despite the increase in fatal motorcycle accidents over the past decade, the rate of serious injury accidents has fallen. In 2010, there were approximately 82,000 injuries related to motorcycle collisions. In 2018, the estimated number of accidents was virtually identical. However, the per capita injury rate fell because of the increase in the number of registered motorcycles during that span.
