The dog bite laws in New York and New Jersey are slightly different. New Jersey has a strict liability dog bite statute. That means that dog owners are absolutely liable for any injuries caused by their dog. New York has a sightly different standard. In New York, you must be able to show that an owner knew or should have known of the dog’s dangerous propensities before the bite. That doesn’t mean they get one free bite, but you have to show some knowledge on the part of the owner that the dog had dangerous propensities.
