How does alimony work?

Alimony, or spousal support, is calculated based on specific factors in both New York and New Jersey. The court looks at 13 to 29 different factors, such as the age of the parties, the education of the parties, the duration of the marriage, whether or not there are children and the age of the children, and very importantly, how much money has been accumulated by the parties?
