These lawsuits protect consumers who may have suffered financial losses and/or injuries at the hands of a company, as one or many individuals who have sustained damages in similar situations can sue on behalf of themselves and all others who have been wronged by the acts of a defendant.

Recently, a class action lawsuit was filed against eBay in a U.S. Federal Court over a security breach that happened on the auction site earlier this year.

According to PC World, Collin Green, of Louisiana, alleged that the security breach was the result of eBay’s inadequate security and the company failed to protect the identity information of its millions of customers.

In May, eBay announced that it was “aware of unauthorized access to eBay systems that may have exposed some customer information.” The company then advised users to change their passwords.

“The thieves had access to, and reportedly copied, customer names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth, at a minimum,” according to Green’s lawsuit.

PC World reported that the combined claims of the proposed class members exceed $5 million, exclusive of interest and costs.

It is alarming that millions of people could have had their passwords and personal information compromised through this alleged security breach. In cases like this, it is possible that users could see fraudulent charges on their credit card statements and/or cases of identity theft.
