As public outrage mounts against Target following the retailer’s data breach of security last month that placed 40 million credit card users at risk, a Portland, Oregon woman filed a class action lawsuit against the company.
According to the Associated Press, Lisa Purcell filed the lawsuit in a U.S. District Court, seeking damages in excess of $5 million from Target.
The lawsuit said that Target “failed to implement and maintain reasonable security procedures and practices appropriate to the nature and scope of the information compromised in the data breach.”
Because of the security breach, banks were scrambling around the Christmas holiday; Chase bank announced that 2 million affected debit card members would be limited to a maximum of $100 cash withdrawals and $300 in purchases per day, while an investigation into the breach was ongoing.
The data breach exposed credit card information for customers who swiped their cards between November 27 and December 15 at Target stores. As of last week, it remained unclear how the breach occurred and how much data hackers who targeted the retailer have.
Last week, Fox News reported that “credit and debit card accounts stolen during a security breach involving retailer Target have reportedly flooded underground black markets”, where they are being sold for cash payments.
Target’s poor data security structure put many Americans at risk for fraud and identity theft. People have a right to privacy when it comes to their financial information. It is troubling that so many people are scrambling to check their financial accounts because of Target’s negligence.
