According to LoHud.com, a nursing aide in the Bronx has been accused of raping a 64-year-old resident of the Manhattanville Health Care Center.
The website reports that Nanic Aidasani, 42, a certified nursing assistant employed at the center, was found on top of the woman at about 1:20 a.m., on February 18. Another employee at the center discovered the alleged rape.
The woman needed medical treatment, although the New York Police Department said her injuries were not life-threatening. The NYPD’s Special Victims Office arrested Aidasani.
Aidasani has been charged with second-degree rape, a felony filed against someone believed to have raped someone incapable of giving consent, according to LoHud.com.
LoHud.com attempted to get a comment from Manhattanville Health Care Center about the incident; however, the facility did not have anyone available to discuss the case.
The New York Daily News reported that the victim suffered from severe dementia, making it impossible for her to detail the incident to investigators.
“It’s just heartbreaking to see her suffer to this extent,” the victim’s daughter told the News. “It’s a really hard and difficult situation right now.”
My Family Member Was Sexually Assaulted in a Nursing Home
Approximately 5.1 million Americans over the age of 65 suffer from dementia, with some studies indicating that up to 50 percent of them suffer from some form of abuse at the hands of a caregiver.
Elders who experience abuse or sexual assaults have a 300 percent higher risk of death compared to people who have not been abused, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse. This is why nursing home abuse and neglect is something that needs to be taken very seriously.
