Alimony, or spousal support, is paid to a party who needs help in the future. The more-moneyed spouse will pay spousal support to the less-moneyed spouse to help them get along in life. It’s determined, in New York and New Jersey, based on a formula. The formula is complex. But as a general rule, it will be paid to the person who needs help.
