Financial disclosure begins early in a New Jersey divorce, and a single court form carries much of it. The Case Information Statement lays out each spouse’s income, expenses, assets, and debts for the court and the other side. Here is what the form requires and why Hackensack residents should treat it seriously.
The Case Information Statement Sets Out Each Party’s Finances
New Jersey Superior Court uses the Family Part Case Information Statement to record each party’s financial details in a family case. It covers the issues in dispute, including custody, parenting time, alimony, child support, equitable distribution, counsel fees, and college expenses. Both sides complete their own, and the court and the other party rely on the answers.
The Statement Is Due Within Twenty Days of the Answer
The form’s instructions say it must be filed and served within 20 days after the filing of the Answer or Appearance. That window is short. Starting the paperwork before the Answer is filed gives a party more time to gather the numbers.
Missing the Deadline Can Cost a Party Its Pleadings
The instructions state that failure to file may result in the dismissal of a party’s pleadings. That consequence can end a party’s ability to argue their side. Keeping track of the filing date and working backward from it prevents a rushed submission.
The Form Has Seven Parts
The statement is organized into sections:
- Part A: case information and the issues in dispute
- Part B: employment, insurance, and prior or pending family actions
- Part C: income, including last year’s, current, and year-to-date
- Part D: monthly expenses, comparing the marital lifestyle with the current one
- Part E: a balance sheet of assets and liabilities
- Part F: a narrative about special problems, such as business valuations
- Part G: a checklist of required attachments
Part D asks a party to describe both the joint marital lifestyle and the current one. Honest, complete answers matter because the numbers can shape support and property discussions.
Supporting Documents Must Be Attached
Part G lists the documents that go with the form. They include last year’s complete federal and state tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, and K-1s, and the three most recent pay stubs. A party must also include bonus information, a benefits statement, and the Affidavit of Insurance Coverage under Court Rule 5:4-2(f). Agreements between the parties and any existing orders from other family actions belong in the packet as well.
Collecting these items takes time. Hackensack residents can ask a Hackensack divorce lawyer to build a checklist so nothing is missing when the deadline arrives.
Retirement and Other Assets Belong on the Balance Sheet
Part E requires a full picture of what each spouse owns and owes, and retirement accounts belong on it. Questions about retirement funds in divorce come up once the balance sheet is complete.
A party who owns a business should say so, since Part F is where the form asks about business valuations. Efforts at protecting assets during divorce start with an accurate list of what exists.
Digital assets raise their own questions. One example is whether a party must disclose bitcoin held in an account.
The Form Must Be Updated When Circumstances Change
A party has to file an Amended Case Information Statement when circumstances change, such as moving out and renting a new apartment. Keeping the numbers current avoids disputes over what was disclosed and when.
The Statement Is Certified as True
The filer certifies that all assets, liabilities, and income have been disclosed and that the information is true. The certification also states that a person who willfully provides false information may be punished. Confidential personal identifiers must be redacted from submitted documents.
Support Issues Depend on Accurate Numbers
Income and expense figures feed directly into support discussions. Parents can ask a Bergen County child support lawyer how the figures on the form are used when support is set.
A divorce case involves more than one issue. Clients can ask a Bergen County divorce lawyer to look at the whole case, including custody, support, and property.

KGG Law, and Barry Kantrowitz in particular, set the bar high for what a thorough, practical, strategic, compassionate and smart lawyer can be. Everything about Barry's advice and representation was exemplary and the stress mitigation that resulted was invaluable. On top of that, the ultimate result Barry achieved was beyond what was reasonable to expect and we are forever grateful. Often, people say that you hire a lawyer to prevent a problem. Sometimes, unfortunately, you need an attorney to solve a problem and I could not recommend Barry and his firm any more highly in that regard.Posted on Google

Kate Carballo is a dedicated, passionate, and creative attorney whom I had the pleasure to lecture with at a state trial lawyer's conference. Kate's lecture demonstrated how she uses her innovative and "out-of-the-box thinking" to achieve outstanding results for her injured clients. That Kate is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a civil trial attorney is a testament to her skills, experience and commitment to excellence.Posted on Google

They walked me through every step of the process after my accident and began every call with “ how are you feeling” which was just one example of how much they care about their clients. They handled my case very efficiently, professionally and courteously. My attorney Kate Carballo was a rock star! So clearly experienced, she consistently made me feel at ease with the process. We had a great experience with the team at KGG Law. While it was a traumatic time for our family, they made it very easy for us and explained all of our options. They even performed due diligence to make sure that after our settlement, there would be no further issues which I think is even more important than the settlement itself. Thank you!
