The news source reported that Santiago F. Mercado, 42, and his son, 22-year-old Santiago M. Mercado, both of Nyack, as well as Harry Bulatowicz, 58, of Ellenville, New York, died in the crash.

State police said that Bulatowicz’s cement truck was disabled on the northbound shoulder of I-287 at about 12:30 p.m., and that the Mercados had been helping him when a tractor-trailer struck the side of the cement truck.

What Should I Do If My Loved One Dies in a New York or New Jersey Truck Accident?

Because tractor-trailers weigh more than other vehicles on the road, aside from wrongful death, truck accidents often result in broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles reported that there were 10,345 large truck accidents, resulting in 96 fatalities in 2012.

Truck accidents can result from driver fatigue, the failure to follow safety regulations, poorly loaded cargo, aggressive driving, distracted driving, equipment failure and insufficient truck maintenance.
