The reasons behind crumbling marriages and divorce may vary, but one thing is true—sometimes, specific life events can lead to conflicts in relationships.

We bring this up because recently Health.com had an interesting story about which life events can lead to a divorce. The events that were mentioned mostly involved stressors, and the news source spoke to a counselor and psychologist about how these can negatively influence a relationship.

Among the life events that can lead to divorce, according to Health.com:

  • Illness: A study from Iowa State University found that divorce rates were 6 percent higher among relationships in which wives had an illness such as cancer, heart disease or lung disease.
  • Job changes: An Ohio State University study found that men who are unemployed are more likely to leave their wives, and are more likely to be left by their wives.
  • Childbirth: The Journal of Family Psychology found that 67 percent of couples experienced a drop in marital satisfaction within the first three years of a baby’s birth.
  • Living apart: A study of military families found that the risk of divorce among enlisted service members was directly related to the length of time they spent deployed.
  • Trauma: The article mentioned a couple that married after the Boston Marathon bombings, following significant injuries. The pair divorced quickly after—in a statement, one of the divorcees said that the trauma brought on by the bombing sped up the relationship when the couple should have spent more time testing its compatibility.
  • Becoming empty-nesters: 2013 marked the first time more adults 50 and older were divorced, rather than widowed.
  • Infidelity: Sadly, cheating plays a big role in divorce.
