CNN reports that the dispute surrounds Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit, a product for women who wanted “smooth, shiny manageable hair with no frizz.”
Two plaintiffs, Josephine Wells and Catherine Reny, wrote in a complaint that the manufacturer, Unilever, knew but failed to disclose that the product “contains an ingredient or combination of ingredients that causes significant hair loss upon proper application.”
According to CNN, the case has been added to several other multimillion-dollar pending lawsuits against Unilever as well as partners LEK and Conopco. The plaintiffs in all of these cases are claiming personal injury, negligence and false advertising. The cases have been filed in a California federal court.
Women using the product reportedly suffered visible bald spots, broken and discolored hair, and burned scalps. The product was discontinued last year, but still may be found on some retail shelves, according to attorneys.
According to CNN, “the plaintiffs claimed the product deceivingly used an ingredient that would release formaldehyde — a cancer-causing substance that could also lead to symptoms including irritation, skin sensitivity and breathing difficulties.”
Unilever claims that the product is formaldehyde-free.
