Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Google Over Android App Purchases

According to PCWorld.com, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Google over unauthorized store in-app purchases made on Android devices by children.

The website reported that the class action lawsuit was brought on behalf of “all persons in the U.S. who paid for unauthorized purchases of game currency by their minor children through the Google Play app store.”

The lawsuit was filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Many of the apps on the Google Play store are offered as free, but designed to induce buyers into purchasing add-ons, the lawsuit notes. Many kids fell for the ploy and purchased the apps and add-ons without their parents’ authorization.

“These games are highly addictive, designed deliberately so, and tend to compel children playing them to purchase large quantities of game currency, amounting to as much as $100 per purchase or more,” the lawsuit states.

Google reportedly requires users to authenticate their accounts by entering a password prior to a purchase, but often, once the password is entered to make a purchase, a user may be able to make additional purchases for up to 30 minutes without having to enter it again.

The lawsuit argues that parents who made an initial purchase for a child may have given their minor a device after entering the password, allowing the minor to purchase apps and add-ons without their permission.

The lawsuit argues that this allows “Google to pocket millions of dollars” from transactions with minors.

In a similar lawsuit brought on recently by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission against Apple over children’s in-app purchases, the company agreed to pay at least $32.5 million back to customers.
