According to MTV.com, actress Hilary Duff and her husband, former professional hockey player Mike Comrie, have decided to separate.

Duff’s representatives announced the split on January 9, saying it was a mutual decision.

“They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives,” Duff’s spokesperson said in a statement. “They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.”

The couple, who live in California, married in 2010, after they began dating in 2007. They have one son, Luca, who turns two in March.

Duff’s mother, Susan, told TMZ that the couple is preparing to file for divorce soon and that they have agreed that they will share joint custody of the child.

Duff is best known as the child star of Disney’s Lizzie McGuire series. Comrie played for the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Phoenix Coyotes. The couple reportedly went to counseling in an effort to save their marriage.
